UGOS

Works
Biography

Was born in 1961 in Chalons-sur-Saône. Lives and works in Paris.

The paintings of UGOS are Pop art’s microcosms of forms, materials, colours and drawings.
At the beginning, there is the white canvas which is quickly covered with childrens' toys of children. As a broken relief by the use of collages, it now requires only the support to be painted. UGOS composes then scenes of our everyday life, essentially urban. The street, the buildings, the traffic and numerous characters living simple moments are a rich source of inspiration for the artist. His view of our society oscillates between humour and gravity, from the tonicity of the rough colours until the depth of the grey in its series in black and white.

In the filiation of Jean-Michel BASQUIAT’s graphics and Miguel BARCELO’s materials, the style benefits from the routed and thick black and the frank colours of the naive drawings. Here resides the bond with childhood, this age during which each one plays with these plastic figurines that the artist recovers for his work of adulthood. The paintings of Philippe UGOS offer multiple levels of reading: the glance goes in the meanders in relief coming from the collages then is detached to see and read the flat image of the painting. These are open doors which invite our imagination to delve into this world.

Self-educated painter, the way to painting became essential for him by contemplating the cathedrals of Claude MONET displayed at the Musée du Jeu de Paume in Paris in 1984. He studied hard and practised until he found a very personal expression in which traditional painting, cinema and comics crossed. He shows every year in several Parisian Art fairs and at the Galerie Artima since 2002.
